A Parent’s Need Turns into a Business | Baby’s Best Aruba
We often hear the stories behind an entrepreneur’s business idea and most of them start with a necessity or need for something that they feel is lacking in the market. Our collaboration today with Elaine Voorderhaak from Baby’s Best Aruba is exactly about a need. Elaine shares how she saw a great opportunity in a booming market: the baby business.
But first things first, get to know the mom behind Baby’s Best Aruba
Elaine is 31 years old and is a mother to daughter Adi who is 3 and a half and Loú Storm who is one and a half. She was born in the Netherlands and moved to Aruba when she was 23 and currently works full-time. Next to work and being a mom, she loves to spend her Sundays at the beach with family and close friends, her weekend would not be complete without spending it at the beach. Elaine is someone who considers herself determined, direct and sometimes strict when it comes to being a mom. “I have a lot of love for my family and truly care about friends and family who are close to me. Most of the time I know what I want, I just like to take my time to figure out the best way to achieve my goals. This doesn’t mean that I never have my doubts, I definitely do! Being a mom means the world to me but, I still find it important to keep doing my own thing.”
How Baby’s Best Aruba was born
As a new mother-to-be, Elaine experienced how intense and overwhelming it can be when you find out you’ll be becoming a parent. She had so many questions and wanted to make sure everything was ready for when their baby arrived. Yes, she knew the purpose of diapers but, little did she know there were so many options on a small island like Aruba. Not to mention the key factors to consider when looking for the best diaper for a newborn baby such as price, size, fabric, fit, overall quality and so on.
When Elaine was pregnant with Loú, she decided to dive deeper into the “diaper business”. She started to brainstorm and ask herself “how is it possible for new parents to know more about all the different diaper brands that are available and also how can they get to learn important factors about diapers before the baby is born or as soon as the baby is born?” This is where the need began and so Elaine started working towards the idea of launching her own business: Baby’s Best Aruba, where new parents get the opportunity to test a variety of diaper brands in a fun personalized way.
Baby’s Best offers customized gift packages for new parents and parents-to-be where they are able to test a variety of diaper brands that are available in Aruba in order to determine which one is most suitable for their little one. The idea of Baby’s Best Aruba is that eventually you will end up saving time, money, diaper rashes and a lot of accidents along the way. “My mission is to make the time as a new parent or parent-to-be a little less overwhelming so there there is more time to relax and enjoy the time with their newborn baby” says Elaine.
How can people purchase and test Baby’s Best Aruba and who is it for?
Baby’s Best Aruba is specifically for women and men that are expecting a baby, or recently became parents and have a newborn baby. Most new parents or parents-to-be usually have no idea on which diapers to buy and don’t know that there is actually a lot of different diaper brands to choose from. The diaper packages are also the ideal baby shower or baby gift.
The customized and nicely wrapped diaper gift packages are available in different sizes. How to purchase? Visit their website www.babysbestaruba.com , select the package size you want and place your order. In the order you can also mention if the diaper package is a gift, and mention the name of the parent (to be), and if possible, the gender or even the name of the newborn baby. “I really customize each diaper package so it’s fully personalized, and I also want to offer a nice unboxing experience”. The packages come in a large box or in a re-usable Baby’s Best Aruba bag. It’s all about the details.
Why the baby industry?
We all know that the baby industry is a huge market but how does one decide to venture locally into an idea like this? Read how Elaine got inspired. “When I was doing my research of the ‘diaper business’ in Aruba, I noticed that something like a diaper test package did not exist yet. Yes, ‘diaper cakes’ are a huge thing for baby showers, and when you are pregnant or just became a parent you will get diapers from the hospital or the midwife. However, usually it’s only one brand. Elaine also realizes that diapers are not the ideal baby shower gift but it is definitely in the top 3 things you need when having a baby, at all times.
The concept of Baby’s Best Aruba is still very new on the island as the business recently launched and Elaine knows it will take time (and good advertising) for people to get to know about it but she knows from her own experience how easier, fun and cost-effective it will be for parents to find the perfect diaper brand for their newborn baby by buying or receiving a nice customized gift package from Baby’s Best Aruba.
Three business lessons Elaine has learned so far about starting a business
Baby’s Best launched on October 18th 2021, so the business is still in its startup phase. We were curious to know what Elaine’s tips were in regards to starting a business. Here’s what she had to say:
1. Don’t be afraid to ask for input
Ask questions to others who have their own business or to people who you know are very knowledgeable in starting a business. Elaine says that sometimes she would get so lost in her train of thought and it was super helpful to get some input from people outside of Baby’s Best Aruba who are business-savy.
2. Make it personal!
Your website, social media channels, designs, and packages can look super professional but what sets the tone is when you make it ‘your own!’. Tell your target audience about yourself, why you started the business, and continue to do so, even as your business is growing. “I like to write a personal note with each diaper package, and the tags for each diaper brand are also handwritten.”
3. Avoid procrastinating and just start!
When I told someone I know about my business idea she responded “so what are you waiting for?” That same day I took the next steps to start launching Baby’s Best Aruba. There is really no reason to wait. If you are confident you have a great business concept and if you have done your market research and know who your target audience is, go for it! What else do you have to lose?
We love a good inspiring entrepreneurial story and Baby’s Best Aruba is no different. We hope that Elaine’s story was able to inspire you to start working towards your own (business) dreams as well. As she said it herself “you have nothing to lose” and to all new parents or parents-to-be, we invite you to check out this small business and support!
